Last weekend, I went to London. I saw four shows in three days. One of them? Hamilton, I saw for the sixth time. First time in London, though. The reaction I got when telling this?
“Four shows in one weekend? I could never do that.”
Or: “Six times the same musical? Why would you even do that?”
And the funny thing is: I usually try to explain. I tell people how every seat gives you a new perspective. How each actor adds something unique. How Hamilton—the best show I’ve ever seen—hits me differently every time. And yes, if I’m in a slightly grumpy mood, I’ll sometimes snap: “You watch football every week, don’t you?”
But actually…maybe I shouldn’t explain at all. Because those comments don't come from genuine curiosity. They’re not even questions. They’re judgments, wrapped in casual disbelief. Those are the kind of reactions that make people think twice before sharing the things they love and that’s a shame. Because passion is beautiful. Whether it’s for musicals, painting, gaming, cooking, or collecting vintage train tickets—passion is what moves us. It’s what gives life color. It’s what makes us human.
So next time someone tells you about something they love—even if you don’t get it—try asking a question. Not:
“I could never do that.”
But: “What do you love about it?”
That small shift? It’s the difference between a judgment and a connection. Between shutting someone down and lighting them up. I go to Hamilton because it gives me energy. Because I admire people who put their heart into what they create. Because I believe life gets better when we follow what excites us—and when we celebrate what lights others up too.
So, what sets your soul on fire?
